Rules

The rules are in place to ensure that our community and server remain a fun, inclusive, and safe space for everyone! Do you have a concern about someone breaking the rules? Make a Discord ticket so that our staff can help you!

If you need staff assistance, there are multiple ways to get our attention. These include the following:

  • In Game: Use /helpop helpmessagehere to request staff assistance. You can use /list to confirm what staff roles other players have.

  • Discord: Go to the #create-ticket channel and press the “Create Ticket” button for player-specific issues. For general concerns, use the #help channel.

  • Do not directly message or ping staff members about server-related issues.

If you don’t have anything kind to say, don’t say it at all. Our server has absolutely no tolerance for hateful, derogatory, or impolite speech of any kind.

We expect all public chats to remain clean and free of swears (global chats across the server including market chat, local chat, & public spaces such as the Great Hall, Entrance Hall & Courtyard, Classes, etc.) Swearing acronyms are allowed in Global. In some channels swearing is permitted, such as in house chat, year chat, and local chat as long as everyone present is comfortable with it. Meaning if you are asked to stop, you stop. Swearing at someone is never permitted.

We do not allow taboo subjects that can cause arguments or aren’t appropriate to be spoken about with or around children. For mature subjects we have a moderated NSFW channel (18+ Only) & Politics channel on our Discord.

d. Drunk in Global or on Knockturn Academy Grounds
Section titled “d. Drunk in Global or on Knockturn Academy Grounds”

There is a plugin that gives you “drunk” speech. Being drunk in global chat is explicitly prohibited. Being drunk on academy grounds will result in a point deduction and or detention. You can avoid drunk-talking by putting symbols around your text like [Hey guys!].

Any chat that involves too many characters, caps, or interchangeable caps. If a staff member deems it spam, or annoying, it likely is prohibited.

If a dispute between users arises, everyone involved is expected to resolve the argument or take it out of public server areas and handle it privately. If the argument goes unresolved, we ask that you report it to staff to mediate or agree to disagree. Anyone attempting to argue constantly will be reprimanded for being disruptive to the server experience of others.

On Knockturn we take threats seriously, whether or not intended as a joke. Anyone who threatens another user’s person will be harshly punished. The rule on threats extends to threatening self-harm. If you have a conflict with, or concerns about another user, we urge you to take screenshots and create a report using our Discord ticket system.

Knockturn recognizes exactly three gendered pronouns to allow users to pick what they feel most comfortable with. These are: Wizard(he/him), Witch(she/her), and Wix(they/them). You must always refer to someone using their preferred pronouns.

Asking for money, or to “borrow” money, in any chat is not permitted. You may ask how to earn money instead!

Spell sharing includes sharing in public chat any spell that isn’t currently in a public book. Meaning, if you gain access to a secret spell, you should not share it in public chats or areas. Helping your friends, privately, is permissible.

Common Room passwords should be kept secret, therefore sharing them and declaring them in public places or global is not permitted.

It’s considered a serious and very bannable offense to advertise, whether you advertise another server on Knockturn or advertise Knockturn on another server. Since we hate seeing people throw addresses in our chat, we also do not want to see anyone else put our addresses in another server’s chat. If this does occur, and we are confronted with it or have evidence of the matter, we will ban that person. This is a hard rule in both directions, on our server and on other servers.

Any action that is intentionally done to upset, annoy, or hinder other players (including staff) from having an enjoyable gaming experience, or annoy and waste staff members time, is prohibited. Excessive trolling may constitute harassment depending on severity. These include:

If you are caught killing another user, especially multiple times, you will be punished as it is harassment. (See Rule 9 for exceptions such as PVP areas).

Most things that you aren’t permitted to open are locked, but occasionally accidents or bugs happen. If you steal from something unlocked that should be locked, that constitutes stealing. The same goes for taking wands using spells and not returning them, etc. This is also applicable in the Towny & Mining worlds.

No one is permitted to ruin the integrity of another user’s build. If you accidentally destroy something, please report it to a staff member or make a ticket on the Discord. The same goes for finding anything broken.

Intentional loss of excessive points is prohibited. If this occurs on another account as a tactic to help the other house win, both accounts will receive punishment.

Users are permitted to PVP, so long as it is consensual. You cannot choose to PVP without the other user’s permission, as this will fall under harassment (see Rule 3). Using the command /spellpvp will toggle offensive spells on or off as desired.

Attempting to enforce the rules upon other players as if you have the authority of staff is prohibited. If someone break rule and it makes you uncomfortable, you may ask them to stop. Please do not reprimand, warn, or take action against rulebreakers, that is our job as staff. Instead, report it to us through Discord or /helpop and let staff handle it. Never intervene between staff and another user.

6. Appropriate Roleplay Names, Usernames & Avatars

Section titled “6. Appropriate Roleplay Names, Usernames & Avatars”

Our minecraft server is rated for ages 13+, so we expect no nudity or references to age inappropriate themes in user’s avatar skins, their chosen roleplay names, or their username. If you choose not to abide by this rule, you will be removed from the server until your avatar or name has been changed.

Our Staff are always happy to help, however we have a system in place to ensure we do so the best we can! We kindly request that you abide by the following:

This includes asking the same questions repeatedly, asking about wait times, requesting information on your applications, and asking them to check something they already agreed to handle. Our staff are volunteers, and happy to help but they have their own time constraints! They will get back to you when they have handled your issue or have more information.

If a moderating staff member makes a decision, you must respect it. If you disagree, you may appeal to someone higher on the hierarchy through a Discord ticket. If the decision came from Pandette, the appeal goes to Co-Owners. This hierarchy is: Helper → Moderator → Admin → Co-Owner → Pandette.

You can apply for staff on our Discord, but asking for a staff role directly is not going to work, no matter how nicely asked.

We are expanding our list of approved mods. If in doubt, open a ticket to ask if using your desired Mod is allowed. Mods that are explicitly not permitted contains minimaps, player locations, input macros, etc. Use of unapproved mods is a bannable offense.

Hacking on the server is strictly not permitted. This includes anything that may give you an advantage over another player, or help you enter an area you aren’t allowed in.

Attacking the server through DDoS is not permitted for obvious reasons.

Roleplay rules are supposed to add to the realism of being in Knockturn Academy. As such, the punishment for breaking them is point related. Therefore, we DO NOT want reports of someone breaking them in tickets or /helpop. Unlike other rules that are enforced by Moderators+, roleplay rules are enforced by Knockturn Academy Professors by deducting house points, and in some cases giving detention.

Groundskeeper’s Hut/Forbidden Forest PVP

Section titled “Groundskeeper’s Hut/Forbidden Forest PVP”

9. Groundskeeper’s Hut/Forbidden Forest PVP

Section titled “9. Groundskeeper’s Hut/Forbidden Forest PVP”

Killing and casting on others at Groundskeeper’s Hut and the Forbidden Forest is permitted. If you are repeatedly targeting someone and affecting their enjoyment of the server, it would be considered harassment (see Rule 3) and is punishable outside of roleplay.

Flying inside is strictly not permitted due to being dangerous and potentially breaking something.

Casting a spell on someone without consent is not allowed outside of the Forbidden Forest/Groundskeeper’s Hut. If caught, you will lose house points. If happening repeatedly, it may constitute harassment (see Rule 3).

Classes at Knockturn Academy will occasionally give written homework. These homework assignments are expected to be a creative and fun exercise. Using AI or stealing content from someone else will result in an immediate fail (0 points). Repeated cheating can result in points being taken, detention being given, or harsher action depending on the severity of the cheating.

In order to preserve the beauty of Knockturn’s public areas, we have certain rules when owning an apartment or location inside an area. If you break these rules after multiple warnings, your permissions to own may be revoked. Additionally, you may not be permitted to purchase the location again.

If you have been offline for more than 1 year, your region will be put back on the market without refund and your items can be found in a storage shop sign in the basement of the Junk Shop. You will need to make a ticket in Discord and or in /helpop to recover these items.

To avoid lag, we ask you to avoid adding too many, if any, lag inducing blocks. No active redstone systems and a maximum of 25 entities per location. You can see the complete list of block entities here! Please keep in mind while there isn’t a limit, try not to excessively use leaves as they can create lag.

You are not permitted to block a doorway to an external area unless actively remodeling. Staff must be able to enter the property for build checks.

Professors and higher staff are entitled to offices in the Ministry of Magic and Knockturn Academy. These offices must include at minimum a desk, a bed, and conform to general build code.

We don’t expect all property owners to be builders, but we do expect them to look like normal dwellings, offices, or shops. Essentially, no floors of lava or obviously out of place looking builds that wouldn’t fit in the location.

Whether you use it for an apartment or a shop, each property can have maximum of 1 shop sign and 1 storage signs.

Depending on the region, there are restrictions to how many properties you can own. With the exception of Hogsmeade, which is overseen by the Minister of Hogsmeade, you may choose what to do with a region (apartment or shop). You may own the following # of properties in each region:

  • Hogsmeade: 1 Shop & 1 Apartment
  • Wixing Way/Payne Alley: 2 Properties
  • London: 3 Properties
  • Yorkshire: 3 Properties (includes Little Hangleton, Upper Flagly, & Shambles)
  • Wiltshire: 2 Properties

Aquariums are permitted but the floor must be 2 blocks thick so that water doesn’t drop through the blocks below. It cannot be more than 8 blocks of water in volume. No actual fish are allowed due to lag, but sea pickles, corals, kelp, and sea grass are fine. The aquarium cannot block windows or doorways.

If you’re able to PVP in an area, you may kill someone. This does not include PVP spells enabled while PVP is disabled in a town. This also does not include camping someone and killing them. If you kill someone more than twice in an hour, it could be viewed as harassment (see Rule 3).

Auto-farms, meaning anything that allows you to AFK generate something, are explicitly prohibited. Anything that functions as a farm must include you to push a button for EACH INSTANCE. This means you cannot push a button to ‘turn it on’ and it runs, and then you turn it off. You must be there actively using it the ENTIRE time, and it cannot run on its own.
